Part 3: A Dad

He plunges the filter down into the caraf as the steaming water and coarse ground beans combine, forming a dark black liquid topped with a quarter inch of foam, and adequately handmade cup of coffee to begin a lazy Sunday morning. Today will be free from driving around their 29′ home and the stressors of trying to shift lanes at the last moment or navigate gas station parking lots full of idling SUVs and hybrids. Nor will the rigors of building the Internet be a responsibility for today. Sundays are best served laying around the lounge reading RSS feeds and waiting for noontime to nudge him out the door and into more fatherly, more husbandry-like pursuits.

Their are bicycles tires to fix, in the Texas desert their are always bicycle tires to fix, and various latches and drawers and awnings to be repaired as an RV that’s used is an RV that’s likely broken in some way. Later he’ll accompany the boy on a walk around the block, or maybe to some distant playground, where his obligation will be to watch various performances such as running up the sliding board or making it halfway across the monkeybars and then perform those actions himself, ever-assuring his son that yes, he is a superhero. Tomorrow the entire family will venture into the city they’ve recently arrived in to experiment with restaurants, try and find a post office (elusive things in Texas country for some reason), and otherwise explore their surroundings. But for now, there are still several more sips of coffee and enough news articles to last through noontime.
